Leg 1, 2, & 3 Cancellation - FAQs

How do I get my timing stick to Checkpoint 4?
The Canadian and American borders will remain open overnight so teams already in Skagway are able to drive their Leg 4 runner to their start.

What time zone are the start times?
All start times even if adjusted are still in Yukon Standard Time.
What if I can’t get my timing fob?
Your team will have to self-time using the blue timing sheet
Can we split legs so everyone can run?
No, unfortunately, Legs 1-3 are canceled and in the interest of runner safety, we cannot alter legs for the rest of the race.
Can Leg 1-3 runners run beside later runners?
Yes, as long as the original leg runner is participating at their pace and an additional vehicle is not on the road, an additional “shadow” runner can tag alongside them for the running experience. However, they will not get a race time. “Shadow” runners must not wear a bib and must wear the LED vest.
Why did the first three legs get canceled?
Safety is our number one priority and the following factors would have jeopardized our team, volunteers and runners safety:
-
Our checkpoints need time to get set up (infrastructure set up and safety)
-
EMS capacity is diverted to the incident and we needed to ensure they would be available and ready to support the race.
-
We want to discourage people rushing to Skagway to make their start times.
Do we get a refund for the canceled legs?
No. The Klondike Road Relay has managed this situation as best as we can, and are happy to still deliver the majority of the race for all teams involved. Unfortunately, this situation is beyond our control and the expenses related to the race have already been incurred. As such, we are unable to make any adjustments, as stated in our Race Guide.
Can our Leg 1, 2, and 3 runners leave from Skagway unsupported?
We cannot condone or support teams running the first 3 legs unsupported as there are no marshalls, sweeps, first aid, or other supports in place.
What happens if we get to a checkpoint early?
The cancellation of three legs will change the pace times for some teams. If a racer arrives at a checkpoint before it opens, they can dip their timing fob to finish their leg. The next runner cannot leave the checkpoint until the posted opening time. Teams should note these occurrences on their blue timing sheets. Racers will not be permitted to depart a checkpoint early and will risk time penalties or disqualification if they choose to do so.
