Race Safety

The Klondike Road Relay takes place on the open highways. To ensure the safety of over 2000 runners, support persons, and checkpoint volunteers, we take SAFETY seriously. 

THESE SAFETY RULES MUST BE READ BEFORE STARTING THE RACE

BIBS:

  • Participants must wear the bib assigned to them

  • Bibs must be visible on the front and back at all times. (Do not attach on the legs)

  • If a runner is registered to run consecutive legs they must display the proper number for the first leg when arriving at the checkpoint and the proper number for the next leg when leaving the checkpoint. Except in the case of substitution (see below)

LIT VESTS:

  • All participants must wear the Finning lit vests at all times when running with the lights on

  • The lit vest must be worn on the outside of all clothing and should be visible from front and rear

  • Bibs can be attached to the lit vest

EAR BUDS / HEADPHONES:

  • Participants cannot wear ear buds or headphones while running or walking in the race

  • Participants must be aware of their surroundings at all times and must be able to hear marshals, volunteers and emergency services.

SUBSITIUTIONS:

  • You may only substitute a runner/walker with a fellow teammate. The substitute wears his/her original bib

  • If your team does more than one substitution you are not eligible for team awards

  • The substituted runner is not eligible for a fastest leg recognition for that leg

  • Substitutions must be reported to the next checkpoint manager and reflected on the blue timing sheet

  • Substitutions for the benefit of speed may make the team ineligible for awards. At the discretion of the race director

WITHDRAWAL:

  • Any team withdrawing from the event mid-race MUST inform the next checkpoint manager

BLUE TIMING SHEETS:

  • Teams can track and record individual leg times on the provided blue sheet

  • Blue sheets can be submitted to the timing team at the finish line

  • If a sheet is not submitted and there is a malfunction of the electronic timing system you team will not receive a time

WALKING:

  • Walkers must walk for their entire leg. Walking is defined as having one foot on the ground at all times.

  • If you are on a walking team and are observed running twice your whole walking team will be disqualified

  • Walkers are permitted to run when crossing a road at a designated crossing point.

MASS START:

  • All Walking teams will be started in a mass start at  checkpoint 10 if the leg 9 walker has not arrived by 2:30pm

  • All Running teams will be started in a mass start at checkpoint 10 if the leg 9 runner has not arrived by 3:30pm

  • Your team time will be adjusted at the finish line

  • The leg 10 runner must have the timing fob with them when they cross the finish line to receive a leg time and and team time.

CHECKPOINT CUT OFF TIMES:

  • Checkpoint 2.    3:15 am

  • Checkpoint 3.    4:30 am

  • Checkpoint 4.    4:00 am

  • Checkpoint 5.    6:30 am

  • Checkpoint 6.    9:30 am

  • Checkpoint 7.     11:30 am

  • Checkpoint 7b.   10:00 am

  • Checkpoint 8.     12:30 pm

  • Checkpoint 8b.   11:15 pm

  • Checkpoint 9.     2:00 pm

  • Checkpoint 9b.   1:45 pm

  • Checkpoint 10.   4:00 pm

  • Checkpoint 10b.  4:30 pm

  • Finish Line.           5:30 pm

BEAR SAFETY

  • You are running through a wilderness area so be aware of and prepared to see wildlife

  • Watch the bear safety video below

SUPPORT VEHICLES

  • Pacing your runner is not allowed. Pacing is following close behind your runner

  • Only stop where you can safely pull completely off the road

  • All support team members must wear hi viz (Jacket, vest or similar) when outside the vehicle

  • Support team members must not cross the Alaska Highway on foot
